The wine producing town areas are approximately
in the middle of what is named the Estremadura District and to the
north of Lisbon in the Costa Prata Area.
Alenquer (DOC)
The area is within the boundaries of the municipality of the town of
Alenquer. The red wine is fresh and well balanced with good ageing
potential. The white wine is fully flavoured and quite aromatic. Labels
to look for are Alenquer, Casa Santos Lima, Cerca do Rei, Espiga,
Gorjão, Palha Canas, Quinta de Abrigada, Quinta de D. Carlos, Quinta do
Carneiro, Quinta da Cortezia, Quinta do Monte d’Oiro, Quinta de Pancas,
Quinta de Parrotes, Quinta dos Plátanos, Quinta Solagre and Valle
do Riacho.
Arruda (DOC)
This small area on the east side of the province of Estremadura covers the
municipalities of Arruda dos Vinhos, Sobral de Monte Agraço and Vila
Franca de Xira. The red wine is light and fresh with good ageing properties
and becomes smooth and soft. The white wine is light, fruity and racy.
These are the labels, Adega Coop. do Arruda, Comenda de Sant’Iago
and Trincadeira Preta.
Torres Vedras (DOC)
The municipalities covered by this region are Mafra, Sobral do Monte Agraço
and Torres Vedras. The red wine is ruby-coloured and acquires a definite
smoothness with ageing. Labels are ACTV, Adega Coop. de Torres Vedras,
Fonte das Moças, Parão Velho, Quinta da Folgorosa and Torres Vedras.
The area also produces a sparkling white wine under the label J.P.
Vinhos.
