In the 17th century Portugal was ruled by the King Philip II of Spain (Philip I of Portugal). In order to protect one of his most important ports he had this fortress built overlooking the sea entrance to the River Sado. Because of its elevated position the guests enjoy a panoramic view over the town of Setúbal and its estuary area. The Pousada makes an excellent base for touring the surrounding area as there are many attractive and interesting places for visitors in this region. There are fifteen rooms and one suite with a restaurant and bar.
Setúbal is easily reached as it is only 48 kms south of Lisbon by the motorway.
