The coastline of Portugal offers so many varieties of
water in which to dive that it would be hard to complain
- not forgetting the geographical historical background
of this coast and its importance as a navigational corner
point in Europe for many centuries. Other important and
attractive locations for diving are the islands of
Madeira and the Azores.
The water temperature on he mainland tends to range
between 16 to 22 degrees. This allows for comfortable
diving throughout the year. Besides the abundance of
different fish species there are so many old wrecks
and reefs to explore along the whole of the Atlantic
coastline. One very popular pursuit is to dive at
night and also to visit the many fascinating caves
that have been carved by the sea.
Besides the many ancient wrecks that lie buried below
an interesting site is the British steamboat
"Tiber", sunk in 1847 off the coast near
Porto. Another is the "U 1277", a German VII C Class
combat submarine that was sunk in June of 1945.
With experienced instructors the Diving Schools have
modern equipment for hire and are usually managed by
a mixture of nationalities so communication is never
a difficulty. All dives are made under the strict
regulations as associated with the safety aspect of
this sport.
