Wireless internet access

Postby captainm » Sun Nov 25, 2007 4:06 pm

Hi, please could I have some advise for setting up wireless internet access for my apartment. I do not have a telephone line. Which companies are best, which ones to avoid and equipment required.
Many thanks,
captainm

We use Sapo. Service is good, speed just a little better than BT in UK. You need a phone line though, but installation was fairly straight forward.

Just plugged in the router and it worked. Had a couple of small problems over the past 18 months but tech help on the phone is pretty good and english speaking.

Thank you Tony for your reply.

Could you tell me the cost per month of the fixed line rental and also the cost of a typical connection.

Many thanks,

captainm

The are several options for you, depending on the use that you wish to give to it.

You have Sapo, Clix, Novis or even PT as ADSL providers or Netcabo and Netvisao as cable service providers.

For ADSL you will always need a phone line supplied by PT-TELECOM.

I use a Netvisao service because of the package of TV + Internet.

I came to find that between all of them the price doesn't differ much its just a question of comparing the type of services offered.

I have wireless SAPO broadband with a PT landline - bought as a package from PT's shop in Lagos.

Forget the English speaking helpline (never answered) but if you get HID to sit next to you with a dictionary you can work your way through the set up screens which are all in Portuguese.

The speed is as good as I get in England and I've not experienced any operational problems at all so would recommend.

Thanks Mr.Bill and Itsmeagain for both of your replies.

I will be in Albufeira in two weeks time, can't wait, and I will use the info above to try and have internet installed.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Many thanks,

Hi again.

I think we pay about 35 euro a month for the internet but I think that includes the phone line rental You get unlimited downloads if you opt for a paper-free bill.

Never had a problem getting an English speaker on the helpline. Message at beginning is in Portuguese but if you press option nine straight away you get put straight through.
